I was able to download the maps a week or so ago, but was just in the remote backcountry with no Internet and was unable to get a GPS fix on USGS. I've never had that happen before.  My phone saw 6 satellites via a GPS test, but couldn't fix? Downloaded Google Maps too. Is this to do with the shutdown? Any ideas?

    Hi Patrick,

You will always be able to get a GPS Fix (as long as you have direct/unobstructed/clear access to the skies) even if you don't have a map downloaded, it will show your coordinate location sans the map (unless you have an active data connection or downloaded the tiles of the area) as GPS Functions independently from the Data connection.

You see the satellites but you might not have direct/unobstructed view of it.

I'm guessing the satellite used by the USGS maps is probably on limited access as from what I can confirm, only the Landsat satellites will operate as normal with the federal shutdown.

Google has their own satellite system which they privately maintain and operate.

We really hope congress ends this debacle as soon as possible.

    Thanks,

Hi Dan, I was in the middle of a flat desert, so had an unobstructed view. I shut my phone down overnight, and when I switched it back on again it wouldn't get a fix, despite seeing six satellites. I left it on for about eight hours and it wouldn't get a fix.

When I came back into wireless network coverage later that day, it caugfht up and got a fix.

I was unable to get a fix on the USGS map from your app, and the downloaded Google map using Google's map, app. Are you sure this doesn't hav anything to do with the OPUS post processing that is reportedly down? The GPS web site is also down, by the way.

    Hi Patrick,

My good guess is it's because of the latter (OPUS) since this is maintained by the US Govt.

I guess everything will return to normal once this shutdown is over.

    Thanks,
